A magnificent palace with pointed turrets, jagged crests, tall lancet windows, standing on the shore of a pond – like a living illustration to the novels of Walter Scott. In the center of Russia, it looks unexpected and strange. It's like someone wanted to play knights, plunging into the atmosphere of a medieval castle. He stands solemnly and aloof on a high hill. A sandy path runs from terrace to terrace and ends at the pier, where mythological griffins stand – a symbol of the glory and greatness of the former owners of Marfino. Along the edge of the sedge-covered shore, huge lime trees and maples grow, stretching their gnarled branches above the water. A red brick bridge decorated with arches and columns rises to the left of the palace.
Marfino often changed owners. Each of them brought something new to the architecture. Hidden among the trees is a wonderful Baroque church of the XVIII century, built under Prince B.A. Golitsyn. According to legend, the prince named the estate in honor of his beloved daughter. She drowned while crossing the Volga River near Astrakhan, when she accompanied her husband on a military campaign.
In winter, the Marfa castle is transparent. Only the bare branches of the trees weave their bizarre patterns against the background of the blue sky. The smooth line of tall lime trees, which have shed their leaves, no longer hides two white stone gazebos and kennels built in the classical style. These buildings are the legacy of Count Saltykov, who wanted to make the estate the center of cultural life. He spared no expense for this. One after another, the count organized festivities: boat rides and carousels, dog hunts, organ concerts and literary amusements. Theatrical productions were often organized in the estate, in which, in addition to serf actors, prominent writers of that time participated: N.M. Karamzin and V.L. Pushkin, the uncle of the great poet.
During the war of 1812, the old manor burned down, set on fire by French looters. The new owners of Marfino, the Counts of Panina, gave the palace a majestic appearance in the "Tudor" style, which has survived to the present day.
Since 1933, a sanatorium of the Ministry of Defense has been operating on the territory of the estate. Diseases of the cardiovascular system are mainly treated here. The sanatorium produces its own mineral water, which is used in the treatment of patients. In order to enter the territory, you need to issue a pass. The tour desk organizes tours of the palace and park ensemble of the estate.
You can get to Marfino by car or by train from Savelovsky railway station to Katuar station, from where a bus or minibus departs to the estate.
